If you’re like me, you probably greet the arrival of the summer heat every year with this true dilemma…can I get away with re-wearing last year’s gear or is it necessary to shop for new swimwear? Well, with the stylish and flattering designs in stores right now (really!), you will want to add at least one new suit to your rotation this season, even if your standby styles aren’t totally weathered yet from general wear-and-tear and exposure to sun and chlorine.

Whether your water plans involve lounging at a rooftop pool or lake swims at the cottage, here are the runway-inspired swim trends to know before you shop for new swimwear.

The trend: ’90s-inspired

As spotted in the Tommy Hilfiger spring/summer collection, sleek one-pieces that evoke Baywatch uniforms have definitely made a high-fashion comeback. Bonus points for maillots with a high-cut leg and Americana colour palettes.

The trend: Minimalist Stripes

Graphic, minimal stripes continue to be a huge runway trend this year, and the swim market is no exception. We love this earth-toned bikini by Missoni, but brighter stripes are also a good bet.

The trend: High-Waisted

This chic 2-piece suit by Michael Kors features this season’s must-have high-waisted bottom, emphasized with a wide belt. Extra feminine design details like floral prints and halter necklines are optional, but recommended!

The trend: Retro Patterns

The Miu Miu show featured numerous ’60s and ’70s-inspired geometric patterns in a retro, slightly muted palette. Look for sporty shapes and fun textures when you’re shopping for this trend!
