We’ve had to bid farewell to summer when the days are long and the living is easy—everything is more casual, including get togethers with friends and family. Most of the time, we’re outside, food is popped off the grill (sometimes onto disposable plates), and everybody serves themselves with minimal fuss.
Now, the cool temperatures and rain brought by fall mean that we have to spend more time indoors, but on the up-side, it’s a chance to have some fun dressing up our homes and our tables to make entertaining and everyday life just a little more special.
When the weather turns cool, we naturally gravitate towards whatever makes us feel cozy—soft sweaters, a cup of hot tea or cocoa—and our surroundings can contribute to this comforting feeling too. Natural woods, soft-toned golds, shiny coppers are everywhere in home decor and tabletop pieces. They’re perfect for warming up a room or table setting. Traditional autumn colours, like orange, red, brown, and yellow automatically trigger our association with the best things about the season, like the turning leaves and delicious roasted meals. This year, blue, especially in the deepest of hues, is another colour taking us into fall, away from the bright blues and greens of summer.
It’s easy to find home accessories that reflect fall themes: botanical stems, branches, and wreaths, which are incredibly easy to integrate into a room.
Switching out bright, summery pillows and throws for plusher, deeper-toned versions is inexpensive and makes a living space much more inviting when the temperature dips. One or two “hero” pillows are worth a splurge to give the room a strong focal point and a polished look. Alternatively, buy pillow covers only and switch them out with the pillow stuffers you already have. This saves storage space, too.
Making a stunning tablescape can be as simple as layering in pieces that relate to the occasion or even just the fall or winter season. White or otherwise plain everyday dinnerware can mix beautifully with special appetizer plates or platters, wooden or metal bowls, rustic wood serving boards, and seasonal table linens.
It doesn’t require a major investment to elevate the Thanksgiving meal, a Halloween party, or any fall celebration to new heights—and your guests will definitely notice! Adding candles and fall florals on the table is a virtually effortless way to up the festive factor, and every guest loves to discover a special treat or party favour on their plate when they sit down to eat.
Use your imagination, choose things you like, and embrace the fall season. You may even find that you want to entertain more often, just to show off all of your festive fall ideas.
