From Canada to Italy to Square One: Christopher Bates, known for his modern take on classic menswear, discusses trends, icons, and SQ1CONCEPT.
KEEPING WITH THE THEME OF ELEVATED CANADIAN FASHION, YOUR LINE WAS SHOWCASED AT SQUARE ONE’S HIT POP-UP, SQ1CONCEPT. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART ABOUT WORKING WITH SQUARE ONE DURING THAT TIME?
CB: I was very impressed with the Square One team and with the concept store itself. The team was very professional and organized which made my job easy. The store was spacious and beautifully merchandised.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT?
CB: A good sense of humour.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE IN THREE WORDS OR LESS?
CB: Contemporary-classic, Italian, sartorial.
INSTAGRAM OR SNAPCHAT?
CB: What is Snapchat?
WHAT’S THE LAST THING YOU DO BEFORE GOING TO BED?
CB: I read a novel for 30 minutes.
LIVING OR DEAD, WHO IS YOUR FASHION ICON?
CB: Sean Connery’s James Bond.
WHICH CURRENT FASHION OR BEAUTY TREND ARE YOU LOVING THIS SEASON? WHICH COULD YOU DO WITHOUT?
CB: I’m loving tailored shorts. I’ve worn them myself for a long time so I'm happy to see more guys embracing the look. Pair them with an untucked dress shirts (sleeves rolled up), and brown oxfords.
What I’m not feeling is sweat pants. They should only be worn at home or while exercising. Totally inappropriate for any other situation.
