As Square One Shopping Centre proudly celebrates five-decades, we invite you to step into the future and be the first to experience Square One’s Vision Centre. A space dedicated to discovering the next generation destination, Square One District. This space will serve as a hub for information and inspiration to explore and discover what’s next, because at Square One, 50 years means we’re just getting started!
To celebrate Square One’s 50th, we are taking a trip down memory lane with some never-before-seen archival photos of the shopping centre. Join us for a nostalgic journey back to the early days of Square One and see how our centre has evolved over the years.

The Beginning
Bruce McLaughlin, the visionary behind Square One Shopping Centre and affectionately known as the “father of Mississauga”. The McLaughlin family purchased a 242-acre farm in 1939. It was Bruce’s vision to create and transform the area into a thriving urban centre by breaking ground on Square One in 1969.
Opening Day
On October 3, 1973, Square One Shopping Centre opened its doors, marking a historic moment as Canada’s largest and the world’s third-largest shopping centre at the time. With over one million square feet of retail space, it ushered in a new era of shopping with 170 stores and 4 anchor stores including The Bay, Simpsons-Sears, Woolco and Dominion.
1970’s
Architecturally designed for convenience, the centre featured four spacious malls forming a perfect square, ensuring effortless navigation for shoppers. The heart of Square One was the Garden Court, with lush gardens, fountains and a bandshell while other amenities included a skating rink & cinemas.
1980’s
Square One Shopping Centre embarked on a significant period of expansion, incorporating over 80 new stores and expanding its retail space by an impressive 1M sq.ft. In 1987, Square One demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by introducing one of Canada’s earliest mall recycling programs,
1990’s
This was a time 1990s was defined by Square One embracing the influence of pop culture, the centre hosted celebrity appearances, fashion shows, and community events.
2000’s
Between 2000-2003 Square One witnessed the birth of “Cityside,” an expansive addition that brought 320K square feet of retail, a state-of-the-art Cineplex Odeon and Hazel’s Walk. The rotunda stood as a beacon in the heart of Mississauga.
2010’s
This decade solidified Square One’s status as a premier shopping destination with the 2013 Centre Court & Food Central renovation, the 2014 North Expansion, arrival of Simons, Holt Renfrew & South Expansion in 2016 and The Food District and The Rec Room in 2019.
